| Implants
An implant is an artificial replacement for the root of the tooth,
made from commercially pure titanium or titanium alloy. Implants
are used to anchor crowns, bridges,
or dentures. There is no age limit for
having implants.
A Prosthodontist works in a team approach with other dental specialists
to determine the position, size and number of implants to be placed.
An implant is surgically placed in the jawbone by either a Periodontist
or Oral Surgeon. After the placement of the implant, the bone around
the implant fuses to the implant through a process called osseointegration
- usually taking two to six months to occur. Afterwards the patient
returns to the Prosthodontist for the restoration of the implant(s)
with either crowns, bridges or dentures.
